One of the most important key to happiness is relationship. If you’re married or attached, you know how important that is. Put it this way – you can be the richest person in the world but without a fulfilling relationship, your life is miserable. But you can be poor (but enough to make a living) and yet stay happy if you have a wonderful relationship.
You see, relationship is something very ‘unpredictable’ because you’re not in control and ironically, you can do your part to make the outcome ‘predictable’.
Hold on. If you’re not married yet, you think that this piece of content might not be suitable for you at all. WRONG. Whether it’s relationship with your parents, siblings, colleagues, employees, etc – they all share the same fundamentals.
As you might know, I run my own businesses. And with that, it comes with ‘nasty’ customers too and they do cause stress to a certain level.
This happens when personal and business relationship got intervened.
Of course the best solution is to get rid of the customers but you can’t do that all the time in reality because some of them never asked for refunds. They just demand a lot.
What I want to share with you is how you can separate yourself into two identities (business and personal) for your own and also with other people (whether they’re your friends or spouse).
If you don’t do that, business/work will slowly eat up your life and you’ll be miserable. When you’re in that zone, your business will go down too because your mind is not encouraging business opportunities.
Everything starts from your mind.
I’m not going to give you cheesy tips like go for a walk, take a break for coffee, watching TV, etc. No. You can do all of these but what I want to tell you is…
Understand that the only reason why you are having a ‘Business Relationship’ is so that you can obtain your financial goal.
Then there are other relevant goals for your business/job – to help others achieve what they want and to give you your own sense of achievement when your business is profitable.
Your Personal Relationship? It’s to enrich your life – to have sense of belongings and to experience love.
Once you understand that both of them are not 100% related but instead, compliments to each other, you’ll realize that it’s no point mixing them up.
So whenever you have an internal conflict or with another person, then catch yourself present and ask – Is this conflict related to PERSONAL OR BUSINESS?
Both of them have different goals to be achieved so they’re not related and must be handled in their own ‘world’.
Then the main problem still remains – how do I actually ‘divide’ my feelings from Personal and Business?
Go back to square one – UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU’RE TRYING TO ACHIEVE.
If it reaches a stage where you cannot decide, then at that moment, you’ll need to decide what the priority is and sacrifice the other one as long as it’s moving towards your success outcome.
I have times where I have to sacrifice my time with my wife because I need to give the best value to my customers and there are times, I can’t be bothered at all and will just be with my wife doing what she likes doing.
If it’s a million dollar business deal and it’s going to affect your Personal relationship temporarily, live with it because that one million might give you more enjoyment in your Personal Relationship later on.
Question – How do you prioritize then?
If the Business Relationship can gives you better fulfillment in your Personal Relationship in the future and vice versa, then it’s easy to prioritize. Simple. Know what you want and works towards that.
I’m going to end this sharing with my own experience – if you don’t handle any of these relationships correctly, it’s going to mess up the other one and you’ll be in trouble.
Keep your personal life PERSONAL, keep your business life, BUSINESS.
