I took a 2-week holiday in Hawaii with my wife last month.

Needless to say, it’s one of the best places I’ve visited for vacations, period. People there are warm, lots of things to do, good food, uninterrupted places for relaxing and a bunch more. We even visited the shooting location for the famous TV series, “Lost” and the movie, Jurassic Park.

 My Problems Are Small! Yours?
(Swimming at the beach in Hawaii)

 My Problems Are Small! Yours?
(How beautiful the sunset viewed from a ship)

 My Problems Are Small! Yours?
(Woo hoo! I’m not falling anymore!)

 My Problems Are Small! Yours?
(get the camera off, I’m going home now…)

But I took home a very valuable lesson in life- how to overcome problems.

You see, don’t tell me it’s common to see people taking drugs, drink alcohol or smoke a lot when they’re stressful- when they have problems. Or some will see a shrink (psychiatrist).

Interestingly, the locals in Hawaii, handle that differently. (Of course, not all of them but most the dudes I’ve met there.)

When they have a problem, they just take their surf board and ride on the wave. Or go out fishing peacefully. Some just go for a nice swim in the sea and enjoy what Mother Nature has given.

The way I see it, they don’t have ‘problems’. They don’t make a big fuss out of them but appreciates what life has to offer. As a matter of fact, if you were to go into a rural area in one of the islands, material riches are not their main priority in life – it’s about being happy and live a fulfilling life.

I’m not saying that we can run away from reality by being a surfing dude. Or don’t care about money. Not at all, far from that. And it’s obviously not discouraging you to THINK BIG. Think big.

What I’m saying is- do you think your problem is really that problematic? You might feel that I’m belittling your problem. Well, that’s just unfortunate.

How big your problem is HOW YOU DEFINE IT.

If you have $1,000,000 sitting in your bank account, then $100 is nothing. But if you just got $100 in your bank, then $100 is EVERYTHING. The interesting part is, in reality, the $100 bill value hasn’t change a single bit – it’s your mind’s perception on it that changes.

One thing’s for sure – I don’t have a solution for your problem and this blog post might not helped a single bit to solve your problem. But you can decide for your own whether you want to focus on it and make it bigger than life and suck your energy. Or – go to the beach and enjoy the sunset. Then think how you can handle your ‘small’ problem.

This reminds me of a comment I heard from Anthony Robbins … He says visualize any event [PAIN, PROBLEM, ACHIEVEMENT, JOYFUL CELEBRATION FOR EXAMPLE] in your mind … first expand it till it\’s huge… the shrink it to tthe size of an ANT.

I went to Costa Rica last month and found it similar. The attitude and overall atmosphere is so different than the hustle and bustle of the USA. It is a lesson or something to think about how much importance we place on financial or materialistic objects and then how we choose to handle our problems. We saw things that would cause rage in the USA that was merely laughed at by Costa Ricans. What an enlightening experience.

I have spent 25 years of my life as a self employed commercial fisherman in waters of Hawaii. So I know the problems you face don\’t disappear because of the great setting, but the peaceful and serene setting does help to calm you down and help you to think problems through more clearly.

Thanks great article hope you enjoyed your vacation in Hawaii, and I hope you were treated with aloha.

People down here in Pantanal handle their problems quite the same way as our Hawaiians brothers do. We don\’t surf, but we go fishing. That surely makes you think a bit better and quite often an answer for your problems may come from unexpected places or peoples.

Just back from My Holiday as well.

Problems demand attention. You really have to give them your full energy for them to display their full potential. As you suggest, if you starve them of your mind share, many of them can\’t survive.

I am also reminded that many of my \’problems\’ relate to things that haven\’t even happened yet. If I\’m not careful, I can spend time worrying that could be used to sort things out!
