I was sipping a cup of coffee at Star Bucks yesterday in a shopping mall.
As I was sitting there, I saw a friend of mine going up the escalator and he was wearing an employment batch. I think it was, Intel.
You see, it’s been YEARS since I last saw him.
And I could remember the last time we met— I could remember him as a fully motivated person… someone who is passionate about realizing his dream to be financially free one day. He told me that 3 years from that day, he’ll buy the house and car he wants and travel overseas for vacation each year with his wife. Beautiful young couples.
A goal getter, he was. Probably still is. He was in multi-level marketing (MLM) business and each day, he’ll meet someone to share his business opportunity. I mean, you like to be with him because of the positive energy that vibrates. Of course, he’ll try to talk you into MLM business but that’s another story. (smile)
What’s weird is… why is he wearing an employment batch from Intel today?
I don’t get it. How come he stopped pursuing the MLM business and went back to a job that wasn’t his ideal lifestyle.
Hold on. Don’t EVER think that employment is bad and you got to quit your job, etc because I’m not talking about THAT. I think many jobs offer fulfillment for many people. If this is not true, I wouldn’t be employing my team members.
I’m talking about my friend here. Employment is ideal for others but I know it’s not for him but he ends up there.
It’s probably because he did not achieve his goal to be self-employed or became a business owner. So the closest resolution is to get back to work, since he has a degree in electronic engineering.
Do I feel sorry for him? No. Do I feel sad for him? No. It’s just choices and there’s a possibility that he finds fulfillment in his job now. What I felt is… wasted. Wasted dream when it’s so near and yet, so far.
In life, many people throw in the towel when life’s not working towards their favor.
But isn’t that just… LIFE?
I’m not in any position to justify my friend’s decision. That would be so unconsidered and playing smart when I’m aren’t.
But what happen to his dream? To his goal?
To be a speaker motivating hundreds or thousands of people and touching their heart?
Where did that all go.
Somewhere bottom in his heart. I’m sure it’s still there if opportunity arises again. But he might not do it again anymore because so much work is required now to start the ‘engine’.
In your pursue of success, you’re going to be battered with obstacles one after another like nobody’s business. I’m not freaking you out. I’m telling you straight to your face so that you’re all prepared and will know how to overcome them.
Always have faith in what you do.
It’s like the light that shines on you when everything is dark.
Then you must have hope—A hope that you know soon to be a reality. That’s something worth for you to do what you’re doing today.
I don’t want to sound rude but I think my friend have a lot of motivation but lack of HOPE and FAITH in his ability.
I could imagine where he will be if he had hold on his faith and hope that he’ll be successful today, after 3 years. Probably even richer than I am and work less because MLM business gives such powerful leverage.
I can’t teach you about faith because I’m not a spiritual guru, neither a religion expert. But one thing for sure– it’s always there in you. So I’m leaving it to your own capability to allow Faith to hold you through your journey of success, with a few bumps here and there.
Once you quit, it’s going to be hard to come up again because your heart, mind and soul will feel ‘tired’. It feels like starting from scratch again and that doesn’t sound anything fun.
So if you want to achieve something— could be anything that you’re pursuing now, don’t ever quit. Keep this a promise to me, will you?
You can take a break, smell some roses. But never quits. Or else you’ll be someone looking down when going up the escalator…

Hi Chan, I liked this post very much, I have three goals one is to leave my work, the second one begin to selling my own informational product and build a networkmarketing team here in Costa Rica, and the third one is to improve my english in order to be more confident, because I´ll like to begin to build a internet business but right now I feel that my english is not so good, so these are my goals and your story is there to tell me that I need to fight for them.
Thanks
sir we found ur article very useful regarding the faith we should have and commit to the work we should do and develop positive energy by doing friendship with positive people i will try to develop them as i am a bit negative thinker .thanks a lot.
Good real life example that we could learn from. What you write really touch the heart of your readers.

Great story, Patric. As someone who’s completely changed careers, relocated and remarried several times in my life, I definitely appreciate your advice not to give up this time. You have my promise that I will not let anything let me give up my dream.
I liked what you printed here and it is so true. My biggest belief is that in everything that we do we are only given 2 choices. We can go this way or go that way. At times it might not be that simple because life itself might try to persuade you and you could end up making the wrong choice. The biggest thing is that you always keep moving ahead making accomplishments in your life.
Ouch! I see this article as a mirror of my life. So many big goals, so many opportunities, so many “million dollars” ideas of mine. But the “internal mechanism” was not in sinc with the outside.
Thanks for this eye opening post!

I agree. Don’t give up. Some goals take longer than you might think, but if you focus on that goal, it can be attained. I’m reminded of the Tim Robbins’ character in the movie “Shawshank Redemption” where he is falsely imprisoned and it takes him 19 years of digging through the cement wall to make his break to freedom. That sometimes will give me courage to go on. Other times I just need a kick in the butt and someone to say “stop feeling sorry for yourself and do what you need to do!” to keep going. It took me 12 years to earn my Masters Degree, but I kept plugging away and it finally happened. Just do it folks!
Hi Patric,
Thought you’d want to know that I tried to share your letter/blog as you asked but the URL could not be found (according to the message)!!
Actually taking a break to “smell the roses” is very beneficial to reviving oneself and I thank you for this reminder.
This is taken from a photocopy of a framed, anonymous, but I think highly motivational poem I found on a wall, in the office of a client of the company that I used to work for as a service engineer.
It’s right on the wall (printed on A3 paper) above my PC where I can’t miss it
==( Don’t Quit )==
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must – but don’t you quit.
Life is queer with its twist and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won, had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow –
You might succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup.
And he learned to late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt -
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick in the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when thing seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

Chan,
I have found in MLM the main goal is recruiting. It is a hype program. Instead of selling the product you must sell the prospect on the great lifestyle she/he will gain by signing up and recruit all his friends, family, co-workers, church members, and anyone else he can get to listen.
Faith, Sure one must have faith in ones-self and their ability to convince others of the same hype as she/he was sold on. If one fails, is it because she/he lost faith in themself or in the program or product or,
The life of most MLM products are short. Someone will come up with something better or after a couple of years it will become old, meaning most everyone has heard of the product and or program and is not interested in hearing it again. It will be hard for the best, most experience agent to recruit. The program along with the product will in most instants fade away into oblivion to be heard of no more.
I believe the latter is the cause of most MLM failures, discounting those that never had any intentions of putting forth the work to be a success.
Most people in MLM will be like your friend, when the product and program is gone, a job is almost
always inevitable.
After this happens it is almost impossible to ever convince one to get excited about any MLM programs again. One may not have lost faith in ones-self but will probably never have faith in MLM programs again.
I believe most everyone that has been involved in one or two MLMs will agree that the ones at the top are the ones that walks away with the money while the others go job hunting.
Then there are a few people like Dale Calvert, Don Lapre, and a few others whose names I can’t recall that has the ability to go from one product, and/or programs and continue successfully.

Great article, like always
.
Many thanks!
I’ll tell you where it went, Patrick! It went ‘downline’ all the way down the pan because that’s where MLM belongs for most people (expecially intelligent specialist like engineers!). The MLM route to success is not for everyone; it’s full of hype and ‘fake it ’til you make it’. It requires almost evangelcal zeal with the focus on recruiting, recruiting and the dream results but it cuts out the most important elements of what makes business success a worthwhile reality.
I hate MLM – I/m simply not motivated by recruiting people, having downlines and everyone selling to eachother on the premis that you all make money from your ‘downline’. It’s also really boring and restrictive because you’re dealing with consumers and individuals for small bucks instead of working smart by nurturing key DCN’s in large businesses – one hit big bucks.
The ‘ground floor opportunity’ or firts-comers have the hardest job but the greatest rewards and I think it would be fair to say that the people who benefit via MLM already have systems in operation for sound marketing and finance;; they’re the type of people who are happy selling nuts and bolts or nutrition or ‘whatever’ on a unit/profit basis. All the hype, to be polite, of ‘doing good for others’ is really catchy but totally false. The planes, yathts, exotic seminars, little status badges and gizmos are successful sales techniques to get people to buy in.
Once a working customer for the company, the new recruit, fired up with zeal targets everyone as a potential customer for their downline and road to riches. They buy the product and swallow the dream becoming a fascile pain the butt to strangers, friends and family – they simply eat, sleep and breath a silly product which is exalted to almost worship status.
Some people are made for this and can live on that level of superficiality but most are not and can not. At some point the mists of romance fade (usually through exhaustion and/or boredom with the same old) with the effort of being constantly motivated and motivating new recruits who are reflecting the self-same experience.
MOM is NOT to be compared to or confused with being a successful entreprenuer or self-imployed business person who is fulfilled by doing what they’re good at and enhoy with whom they choose within their chosen field. The latter brings satisfaction, learning and genuine business relationships. It also enables normal and healthy friendships to flourish, untainted by commercial agendas.
MLM destoys many people’s confidence in their ability to create freedom in their work and that is why after the heights of promise of MLM and the inevitable dissapointments, they conclude that they’re probably not ‘cut out’ for running a business and retreat back into the safety net of employment. Hopefully and at best, this is in a job where they can earn good money doing what they’re good at and enjoy with the freedom to do the job their own way. Or not. But this has the advantage of being ‘real’ and they can switch off after work and enjoy their lesure and friendships.
You didn’t mention whether you actually spoke to your friend to gain insight into his experience; you just mention the badge and made a value judgement. For all we know, he was happier being in this job than that MLM outfit.
Don’t get me wrong here, I did some MLM back in the ’80s with a household name and learned at lot about selling. I also learned that MLM did not turn me on. I’ve not been employed since 1991 and never will be again as I’m virtually unemployable!
Recently, I absentmindedly clicked on one of thos (usually very annoying) pop up ads for an MLM because of the subject matter (personal development) and the speil headlines which promosed to be all the things that MLM is not. I got a call, listened to 10 minutes of a teleconference and still get the odd email. But no way, jose’ same old, dressed different.
All the passion, vision and enthusiasm should be directed on what we uniquely are and have to contribute and that will cut through all obstacles and be our highest achievement. It matters not whether we earn 10,20,50 or 100′ of thousands from the process for it is the fulfillment in the process that’s the goal and the joy. Life is a journey, not a destination.
Well, you did ask for feedback Patrick! And if there are typos it’s down to the fact that I can hardly see this silver-grey typeface, so forgive me.
Your posts are really helpful. If I came across them much earlier in my life, I wouldn’t be stuck in the rut that I’m in now.
The road to success is tough and bumpy but I’ll get there…thanks to people like you for making me realize that.
Eye opening and very true. Two very important requirements for any area in life.I personally think hopelessness is almost death.Hope and faith can keep our heads above the waters and storms of life.
The proble is you don’t no. Have faith in what you do and also know that you need to continue so that you will go forward. Focus on your program and do not quit off and on for the phone etc.
This is interesting because I have been a chiropractor for nearly two years now. It has been a difficult ride to get where I dreamed of going. The biggest problem to my success was myself. I was someone who was always making excuses as to why it was not working. It definitely takes faith and perseverence to do what your heart calls you to do. This article helps to keep me motivated on my goals and to keep pushing to reach my dreams.
Woops – “And he learned too late” – it happens…
Dash it!!! “It’s when things seem worst”
It a everyday scene I’m looking into myself and my friends. Sometimes in life we do need 3rd person view or just pad on the shoulder saying “keep it going…”. It even strange that you sometimes feel back in the gears when the person that said to you to keep going on is perfectly stranger .
Your sharing did “Ouchh” me to and get me back in the gears.

SINCE THE DAY I HOOK INTO YOUR MY THINKING AND APPROACH TO LIFE IS DRAMATICALLY CHANGE EVERYDAY I OPEN MY BOX AM EAGER TO READ INSPIRING AND PRACTICAL WAY TO MAKE IT IN LIFE YOU A GIFT TO THIS GENERATION KEEP IT UP MAY YOUR FUUTAIN NEVER RUNS DRY
this is so true…..beside faith, I believed that one has to be really persistent in overcoming the obstacles on the way, making small improvement consistently (kaizen) to reliaze your goals. It takes a lot of guts to take this challenge!!
yup it pays not to quit! just one more step and just one more punch. =)
Hey just the right kind of story that i needed to hear at this important point in my life. I would never give up my dream ! Thanks a lot chan
Hey Patric,
You have some great points that you have brought into the light. The pure fact that you have goals, hold fast to your goals, and condition your mind to believe that you own those goals already, leave no choice that they will absolutely become reality.
For an example we have been building a community on a shoe string since last November. Since then there have been site issues we had to change and build on a new site. Our Mass E-mail won’t format or take code. our affiliate and forum system have had their moments during the incorporation to the site. But all through the negative challenges we have kept a positive outlook. Now without even realizing it we have a site, members are flowing in and most everything is inline with our original vision because of not loosing faith or site of our goals. believe me we could have quit 100 times.
I enjoy your writing and look forward to your next post.

Very inspiring words Patric!
Thank you for the wake-up call. It is so easy to keep doing what is in our comfort zone rather than stretch ourselves outside of it to achieve our dreams.
Hi Chan,
I like your story! At this time, it’s very useful for me when I fail in many applications. You know, I’m an unemployee for a long time (smile). Even now I don’t believe in my ability anymore. When I read your storys, I have more belief in life. Thanks a lot.

My Husband does not believe in internet sales/marekting/business at all..

God Bless You all!
Matter does Matter, speak those things that be not as though they were! God spoke!
Hi Chan,
I am Dev, I really liked your article, but one thing I would like to tell you is that I have read many books on self improvment, so now whenever I read articles like the one you have written, I know that I have read this somewhere else also. And it just reminds me to have faith in myself and nothing else. All these articles make me feel good, but when I return to my world with my family I realise that they are not thinking about what I am thinking and what I am thinking is not important for them. Their behaviour makes me mad and I get angry. I am thinking about improving my life and they still cling to their age old problems. And instead of thinking about that newly found inspiration I get angry on them, and my mind drifts away from my goals, and I am again miles away from my destiny.
I desperately want to keep my self motivated and concentrate my goals, I want to get rich I want to plan for it, but I cant.
Dear Patric,
It sounds very GOOD when you read it. And there is no doubt about the whole idea. But at the same time I would like to know from you that HOW FAR one has to wait with HOPE and FAITH.
I think this a story of all most every one of us.
Regards,
Jignesh.
cHAN YOU ARE RIGHT LIFE IS ABOUT FAITH AND POSITIVE THINKING. tHE IS THE FOMULA.

Hi Patric,
I am in a MLM myself and what you say is true…you will get bumps and bruises but quitting is the only way to lose. Keep at it even when you don’t want to or feel like it and the rewards will come…in more ways then one and in an abondance you can’t really imagine.
Regards,
Marc
Hi Patrick,
That was a good article, it’s always easier to rise after fall when there is faith then without.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for holding me accountable in your post I need that.
Iggy
Dear Chan,
It is a wonderful article and what I liked best in it was “DO NOT QUIT”. Many a times we humans give up so easily after some hardship or failure and dont want to continue on our path to success. I think your message gives me a fair idea of being successful is to remain in the path whatever may be the circumstances or situations in life. Life can get you there provided you wait and have patience.
Hi, I was in a similar situation but this article has rekindled my hopes. I will not quit. Thanks. Raman
thank Patric.
never Quit…i alway read your blog.
i never quit(give up) to create my own simple game(Book). i confident !after sudoku, kakuro(Dr Gareth), circular sudoku, then will be appear my game book one day..isyllh
Hi Patric!
What can I say anymore? Your post today make me think again what I want to do next. You know, I start to get “tired” of internet business but my heart still don’t allowed me to stop. My inner voice always say that I would get what I want to achieve. But, my mind think different. So, it become conflict in myself.
But then, after read your post it seem I get some “energy” and want to stay what I doing now. I know there a lot I had to do but I don’t care! I will face it and do my very best.
Thanks Patric!
hi Mr Chan,
I think your article was good in fact I believe strongly that a person without vision or goals cannot achieve anything. My goal is to enter university nxt year and offer an enginnering course with the intentions of helping solve a major energy crisis in my country. I hope with your message about faith and hope I’ll be able to this.
Hi Patric ,
Good articles, Bro !
I’m an employee and also active in MLM for the past 7 years in 2 different MLM companies.
It’s really about motivation which we have to keep it forever in our life, not because just we active in MLM, but also as a human being.
It seems many people don’t have motivation, because they don’t have DREAMS in their life.
My mentor in MLM said to keep the motivation up an on and on….., we have to own a PASSIONATE DREAM. So not just a dream, but we have to put an emotion factor in our dream.
And it’s really works !
PASSIONATE DREAM HOPE FAITH is a powerfull way to fired up our LIFE MOTIVATION
SUCCESS FOR YOU
Awesome post! It’s true… the only way to truly fail is to quit.
It’s unforunate though that so many people do quit at the first hurdle.
It would have been interesting to find out whether he threw his dreams in all together, or changed direction.

Patric,i totally agree with your opinion. the greatest weakness lie in giving up. don’t quit just take a break.
Hi Patric,
I loved what you wrote. In fact, I have the same experience with you. One of my friend gave up his dream of achieving financial freedom and become employee again. This is the choice we have to make. When we face the hardest barrier, it is time for us to put ourselves to break those barrier, not to quit. Otherwise, it is our choice. It is our call. It is our decision.
nice works,i am a student and don,t have much money to buy the costly products that have been advertised.is there any free product which can help me
yes, i have read ur article and would like to commend that yes it is believing system that helps a lot but i think only believing in Oneself is the half ingredient of the success so believe in you and right time and right direction is the essence of success it is merely my point of view may be u differ what i write .
Thanks a lot for commenting
